One morning on the way to the airport I was saying my prayers in the car. I prayed for a lot of things, but since I’m trying to eat better and loose this tire around my waist, I prayed that God would give me the wisdom to make right choices when it came to the foods I eat.
I got through security and stopped at the coffee shop like I always do to get a cup of tea and something to eat. I got up to the counter and decided on a bottle of water and asked for a cup of hot tea. In the case before me the gooey, sticky, nuts and chocolate filled muffins and buns were calling my name. Remembering my prayer, I took a deep breath and said, “That’s all. Thanks.” The clerk says to me, “Are you sure? Our muffins and sticky buns are really good. I could heat them up for you.” Now I am really trying here. I had to seriously think. I wanted something sweet. I really did. I closed my eyes and thought about it and was just about to cave in and say yes, when I opened my eyes and noticed a full length mirrored wall right next to me. I had never seen it before. I’d been there hundreds of times. I took one look at my reflection and that tire growing around my belly and said, “Nope this is all I need.” As she rang it up I said, “You know, this full length mirror you’ve got here isn’t helping you sell any muffins!” My comment managed to get the few people waiting in line to chuckle a bit. I was serious.
But now think about this; I have been in the USAIR terminal around 50 times a year for the past 12 years. I always get something to eat and drink at this coffee shop. I have never seen that mirrored wall before. It was there, I just didn’t notice it until I asked God in His amazing wisdom to help me to make right choices. All I needed was a full length mirrored wall and my reflection to know that I did not NEED a muffin! I walked away with my bottle of water and cup of hot tea. I looked upward and I smiled a smile of gratitude.
