Today I sat next to a man by Yvonne Conte

Just as my pastor gave his sermon this morning about being grateful, a tall handsome man sat next to me in church. I always put my papers and my cup of coffee on the seat next to me in order to keep people from sitting there. Basically I like my solitude and much to everyone’s surprise, I’m really not a ‘people person’. But here was this handsome man asking me if the seat was taken. I quickly removed my paraphernalia and welcomed him into the seat next to me. Immediately I noticed how I was feeling. This is odd, I haven’t sat this close to a man in church in over twenty years. In fact I rarely sit this close to a man….ever. I couldn’t help but notice his shoes were clean and he was well dressed. I took a deep breath and noticed how good he smelled. He smelled like a man. I closed my eyes and really enjoyed that moment that took me back over two decades. I like the smell of a man. Fresh, clean and well,… manly. I listened to him inhale and exhale and I thought how nice it was to hear someone breathing. I really tried not to think of this man sitting next to me. After all, I was in church. But the longer we sat just an inch from one another, the more I thought about how really wonderful that felt. In that moment I realized how much I’ve missed for such a long time. Toward the end of the service the pastor asked us to send a thank you note to someone this week. He asked us to close our eyes and think of what we should be grateful for. All I could think of was that every women I know who has a good, kind, man who sits next to them every Sunday in church should be grateful for that. I wondered how many take that simple thing for granted.
